Food Information for Russian Blue Cats

What type of food is best for Russian Blue Cats?

Russian Blue cats are carnivores which means that in the wild, they hunt and eat their prey. This is why they need a high-protein diet. Luckily, we have a great selection of food available for our Russian Blue cat. These foods in my recommendation list are high in protein. They also contain all the vitamins and minerals our cat needs for good health.

How much should I feed my cat?

For an average adult Russian Blue Cat, they should consume around 250-300 calories per day.  Russian Blue Cats tend to not finish their food in one go and instead graze more often.

For an average adult Russian Blue Cat, they should consume around 250-300 calories per day.  Russian Blue Cats tend to not finish their food in one go and instead graze more often.

Russian Blue Cats love food which means that you will need to be vigilant with the amount of food you give them.  Russian Blue cats will ask you for food more often than they should be eating. Because of this you need to establish an eating schedule and stick to it.  Luckily, Russian Blue cats pick up new habits pretty quickly.

Russian Blue Cats enjoy having a mixture of wet and dry food.  Wet food also provides them with fluids.  Often, cats will not drink as much water as they need. Giving them wet food, provides them with fluids as well as all the nutrients they need.

Dry foods can be helpful in keeping good dental care for your cat.  Some dry foods such as Royal Canin Oral Care, are perfect to look after their teeth. The dry food pellets, scratches against their teeth and cleans them as they bite into the food.

Below you will find my recommendation for the different types of food for your Russian Blue Cat.  All the research was done by myself.  Where possible, I tested the foods on my cat Mimi to check which flavors she seemed to prefer.

Water Consumption

On average, kittens should be drinking around 3.5-4.5 ounces of water per day. The average adult cat should be drinking around 7-9 ounces of water per day. This is not always easy. On average cats don’t drink enough water which is why we should introduce some wet food in their diet. Wet cat food typically contains at 50% water which help with keeping your cat hydrated.

Homemade Food and raw meat diet

You can prepare your cat’s food at home if you prefer although it can be a little time consuming. Preparing the food yourself is the best way to make sure that your cat is eating good quality food. Do ensure that you research what your cat can and can’t eat before doing so.

Food Allergies

Although Russian Blue Cats don’t have any specific allergies, doesn’t mean that they can’t develop one. Be on the lookout for the usual signs of allergies that include:

· Licking specific areas
· Excessive scratching
· Hives
· Vomiting

Diet plan

Putting together a diet plan is a great way to keep your cat healthy. This can be done with the help of your local vet or you can do the research online.

Find out the specific nutritional needs of your cat and then examine the different foods available to ensure that the food provides them those nutrients. Once the plan is in place, you will rarely need to change it as cats fall into their eating routine pretty quickly.

Protein

Russian Blue Cats are carnivores. This means that they needs a high protein diet. The protein needed for Russian Blue Cats should be animal based to reflect the type of food they eat in the wild.

Carbohydrates

Their stomachs can only digest a small amount of carbohydrates so it should be kept to a minimum

Wet vs Dry

A combination of dry and wet food works best. Wet cat food will ensure that they are getting the extra fluids they need while dry cat food can help in reducing plaque build-up on their teeth. Dry food can also help to keep their weight in check because the process of having to chew the food slows down their eating.

Human foods

Generally speaking it is better to not give your cat any human food. However, a small serving of cooked chicken is something they really like. Ensure that you don’t give them any chicken skin and no sauce. The best way to do this is to cut a small piece from the white meat that has not been exposed to frying or sauces.
